Multiple studies have shown that a strong relationship exists between gender inequality and food insecurity. Historically, however, the discourses around food security and nutrition in India have not incorporated or been framed around gender issues.

The India Food Security Portal organized a second national conference on ‘Gender Just Food and Nutrition Security in India’ on August 29, 2016 at the Indian Habitat Centre in New Delhi as a follow-up to an event on ‘Gender Just Food Security’ that was organized by IFPRI on December 14-15, 2015 in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

It is estimated that women comprise around 25 percent of the total agricultural labor force in India. However, there has been much recent debate over whether this under reports female participation in agriculture as in most rural regions, agriculture is the most important occupation for women. Currently, women’s contribution to agricultural production in India, especially on a micro level, is not completely clear.

Agricultural production in Odisha is dominated by rice farming accounting for 46 percent of the area under cultivation and 79 percent of total food grain production. Generally, rice yields in Odisha remain low with high levels of poverty and farming systems are vulnerable to natural calamities, including droughts and floods.
